A day out in the Sea

Written by Duara Safaris

Mombasa is known famously for the Sun, Sea and Sand…..The Sun because it is almost a constant guarantee and we rarely get continuous rains for most of the year but they are interspersed with bright sunny periods and temperatures during the whole year rarely goes below the 26 degrees Celsius  so a warm hot year round perfect weather….the sea because it is warm and hot Indian ocean waters  perfect for a dip in the sea any time and also great for going out to snorkel there is amazing sea life to enjoy. The sand because it is a great feeling to lie down and soak the sun rays, build sand castles or walk for endless miles….

With such wonderful charming statistics you would think there is no need to add more well the island life just keeps on evolving and sometime in the past one of our sea faring Captains discovered that during low tides there were certain times in the month when small sand islands appeared in the sea and presented an opportunity to sail on a traditional Arabic dhow to this wonderful island spend a day frolicking like Robinson Crusoe only with style accompanied by lovely biting’s, champagne and lots more the trip turned out to be a great day of relaxation and fun.

Followed by a fifteen seafood course meal at La Marina Restaurant which has a brilliant view of the Mtwapa creek afterwards; to crown the day climb aboard the dhow and sail on the Famous Mtwapa Creek enjoying the Mangroves, palm trees and beautiful landscape that dots the area. With entertainment on board it proved to be the perfect day at the Coast. Well the Captains work has been sustained to date and is one of the highlights of really truly living it up at the Coast why don’t you try it click on the following link Champagne Dhow Cruise to book. The next trip sails on the 27th January 2013

We continue to explore the City of Mombasa and our Focus this week is Mombasa Old Town or as it is known in Swahili “Mji wa Kale” Originally the Main epicenter of Trade and now a residential area. There is so much to see as interactions between occupying foreign powers and the indigenous people produced a fascinating and varied historical and cultural lifestyle, full of contrasts. There is much to see and learn when you take a tour you will have a rare insight into the colorful, multiracial town starting from Fort Jesus Museum and then proceeding along Mbaraki Hinawi Road where one will see Mombasa Club, The Africa Hotel, The Mandhry Mosque, The Old Port Government Square, The Bohra Mosque and Leven House. On Ndia Kuu Road, notable features include Reitz House, the presumed site of the Old Portuguese church, Mombasa House and Whitehouse, The Lookmanji and Al’s Curio shops, Jubilee House and Mazrui Graveyard.

Apart from displaying the rich architectural heritage, this tour shows you the visitor the living culture of the Old Town through experiencing traditional centuries –old ways of trading and the features portray a blend of European and local cultures. The Old Town is an integral part of your visit to Mombasa and is one of the best ways to learn and understand the culture and peoples of Mombasa to walk through the narrow streets and interact and see a different way of life it is an amazing tour and an amazing place to visit.
